How to Use Proxy with Internet Explorer

You can use a proxy to protect your privacy while browsing the Internet. Web users also have many other reasons for using a proxy. Whatever your reason is, to be able to use a proxy, you first need to configure your browser to connect to a proxy server. The method of doing so varies depending on what web browser you use. If you are using Internet Explorer, follow these steps to set up your browser to use a proxy.

  • Step 1: Open your Internet Explorer browser. If you don’t have a web browser and prefer to use Internet Explorer, you can download the latest version of it from the Downloads page of the Microsoft web site for free. After installing the browser, just go to your Start menu to locate it and open the program.
  • Step 2: Open the Tools menu from the toolbar. You will be given a list of options. If you are using the latest version, which is Internet Explorer 9, you won’t find the traditional toolbar anymore. Instead, just look for the gear-shaped button at the upper right corner of the window, right below the exit button. You can also open the Tools menu by pressing Alt+X.

  • Step 8: Provide the web address and port of the proxy server you wish to use. The default port is 80, but since not all proxies use this, you may need to change it.
  • Step 9: Click OK when you're finished. Click OK again until you close the Internet Options window.
  • Step 10: Close Internet Explorer and re-open it again. After that, you can start using your proxy connection.
